A mill called 'the King's Mill' stood on the lade in present-day John street. Before 1480 the mill was held by the sheriff of Bute, but in 1527 James V granted to Patrick Colquhone and his wife the mill, mill lands and a stricted multures (mill dues) for a yearly payment of thirteen merks (Hewison, 1895, ii, 211).
