For some time before 1680 the town had been 'desolate of ane schoolhouse for training and educating of children' (Whyte, 1910-11, 49). Thus, in 1680 a school was built in Castle Street with stone which reputedly came from the shore and 'key' (Whyte, 1910-11, 52). This building was a small one with an earthen floor and thatched roof measuring twenty feet (6.10m) long and seventeen feet (5.18m) broad. In this instance the town council had no money to pay the ruilders so they gave him land and stone (Whyte, 1955, 37). A replacement school building was erected in Bishop Street in 1798 (Ross, 1880, 308).
