Special surveys were undertaken by RCAHMS in order to satisfy requests by external partners or clients, or to provide enhanced information to the National Monuments Record. They usually focused on a single site or a small geographical area. From October 2015 this function has been undertaken by Historic Environment Scotland (Cultural Resources: Survey and Recording) in respect of the National Record of the Historic Environment.
