NO 51140 16500 (NO51NW 487) A evaluation was undertaken on 14 December 2013 in advance of development work for a nursery school in a garden to the rear of the listed property at 44 South Street. The excavation of a single trench, covering 10% of the area, revealed that the soil profile had undergone significant modification, with the addition of an imported

topsoil over the medieval burgage plot’s original soil. The absence of features or finds suggests the area was not intensively used in the medieval period. The rare presence of oyster shell and animal bone in the buried soil suggests occasional fertilising of a ‘backland’ area given over to cultivation.
