Reay 3, Caithness, cruciform stone

Measurements: H 1.3m, W 0.58m

Stone type: sandstone

Place of discovery: NC 9590 6455

Present location: beside the road in New Reay village.

Evidence for discovery: formerly it stood near Reay parish church and is traditionally known as the market cross. Another local tradition derives it from Crosskirk.

Present condition: the upper arm is missing.

Description

This cruciform stone has a cylindrical shaft and rounded arms but no ornament.

Date range: eleventh century or later.
