In 1981 excavation of five pits at the NW end of the line showed that they varied from 2m to 3m in diameter by up to 0.7m in depth. The pits, which had been dug across a landscape of grassland with scrub woodland, were left open to fill up naturally. A radiocarbon date of 110 +/- 70 BC (GU-1632) was obtained from a lens of charcoal-rich soil at the top of the primary deposits in one of the pits.
