AOC Archaeology was commissioned by Castle Street Developments Ltd to undertake an historic building survey of a former farmsteading at 603 Queensferry Road, Edinburgh. The work was required by the City of Edinburgh Council Archaeology Service, on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, prior to its intended renovation. An archaeological watching brief was also required on all ground-breaking works associated with the development, which included the footprint of an intended new built to the north of the site. The nearby site of Braehead has origins in the early 18th century, although historic mapping is too small scale to identify whether the present steading buildings date to this period. It is more likely that the present buildings date from the early-mid 19th century as a courtyard steading, slowly expanding throughout the 19th and into the early 20th centuries. The archaeological watching brief did not identify any archaeological finds or features.
