Scope and Content Interior of second floor of Lord Chancellor's House, Crossgate, Cupar, Fife The Lord Chancellor's House on Crossgate was built in the 17th century and remodelled in the 18th century. Its name comes from a plaque recording the birth of Lord Chancellor Campbell in the house in 1779. This shows the remains of the clay-built partition of the east wall of the south west room of the second floor. John Campbell (1779-1861), first Baron Campbell, famous legal biographer, Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor was the son of the George Campbell, writer of the Statistical Account of Scotland's article on Cupar, and for 50 years its minister.
