Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This view shows the front of a stone that once stood on the left side of the entrance to the burial-ground. It bears a ring-headed cross carved in high relief and decorated with a number of bosses. The shaft is decorated with three pairs of beasts. The carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common theme is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
