Scope and Content Sculptured stone from Meigle, Perth and Kinross This stone is one of over thirty cross-slabs and sculptured stones found in or near the churchyard at Meigle. Most of the stones were discovered during the 19th century, many having been reused as building blocks in the church walls or a nearby kiln. This drawing shows the right side of a recumbent grave-marker which once lay in the garden of the manse. It features naturalistic carvings of four animals. On the left a wolf grasps the hind leg of a stag in its mouth. On the right is a pair of bulls. The collection of carved stones at Meigle form one of the most important collections of Pictish and Early Christian sculpture in Eastern Scotland. Most are carved in high relief, and a common them is violence - between animals or men and animals. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
