Scope and Content Standing stone, known as Macbeth's Stone, Belmont, Perth and Kinross Macbeth's Stone is a large standing stone, which is situated immediately south-west of the gate-lodge on the south-west side of the Belmont Castle grounds. There are over sixty cupmarks carved on the stone, mostly on the east and west surfaces. This is a view of the east side of the stone. It bears at least forty cupmarks, measuring up to 60mm in diameter. Most of these are placed in a band across the face of the stone at a height of about 1.4m above the ground. The stone is traditionally said to mark the grave of a 'hero' slain by MacBeth mac Findley, the King of Scots from 1040-1057. MacBeth, who in reality bears little similarity to Shakespeare's version, has several monuments in the area named after him. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
