Scope and Content Reconstruction of bag dam, Mucomir Cut, 19 June 1959 The North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board was established by Act of Parliament in 1943, to generate electricity in the Highlands of Scotland, using the water-power potential of the area to supply local needs. During the next quarter century or so eight large, and many small schemes were completed. Here shown is the reconstruction of a temporary dam over the river Lochy after it had collapsed in 8-9 June 1959. The crane is placing large stones in the river bed, which will then be strengthened with jute bags filled with concrete. The men in the centre are standing on the remains of the original dam. The Mucomir Project is one of the smaller hydro-electric schemes constructed by the North of Scotland Board. It uses the water which flows from Loch Lochy to Loch Linnhe. The flow is very variable, so the works had to cope with severe flood conditions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
