Scope and Content Plan of Keiss broch, Caithness, Highland Keiss broch lies on a beach within Sinclair's Bay, north-east Caithness. The site was one of several brochs excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), the proprietor of the Keiss estate. Between 1890 and 1906, Barry excavated around 14 brochs. The watercolour shows the plan of the broch. An entrance can be seen in the north-west and a staircase in the south-west. A series of internal partitions, hearths and tanks are also shown. Also note the annotations and key which help us understand the multi-period nature of the site. The watercolour was painted by John Nicolson (1943-1934). Nicolson was a skilled artist with a keen interest in the archaeology of the area. He excavated with Barry and recorded many of the structures and artefacts that were uncovered.
