Scope and Content Henge monument at Balfarg, Fife The penannular ditch of this henge was first recognised as a cropmark on aerial photographs in 1947. The ditch enclosed an area within which two standing stones had already been recorded. One stone marked the position of the western entrance. This is a view of the henge as it was reconstructed after the excavation. The two standing stones have been re-erected and the main timber circle is marked by a ring of wooden posts. This henge had been levelled by ploughing and lay on a slight rise in open ground. It was totally excavated in 1977 in advance of a housing development. In the interior, excavation revealed the sockets for concentric circles of stone and timber. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
