Scope and Content Bonnington Power Station, Falls of Clyde Hydro-Electric Scheme, interior of Bonnington Power Station, no date, probably taken in 1936 Bonnington Hydro-Electric Power Station and Stonebyres Hydro-Electric Power Station (completed 1926) provide electricity a densely populated area of West Central Scotland. They use the power of falling water diverted through a series of tunnels and pipelines to turn turbines which revolve generators to produce electricity. The interior of the Bonnington Power Station, shows the two alternators, on their concrete plinths. The openings in the cast iron casings are for ventilation. On top of the machines are the small exciter dynamos for magnetically energising the stator coils. Bonnington Power Station is the largest of two power stations in the Falls of Clyde scheme, the smaller one is located at Stonebyres, below the town of Lanark. Both are still in use, though the machinery has been replaced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
