Scope and Content Plan of Wester broch, Caithness, Highland Wester broch is located on Sinclair's Bay, near Keiss in north-east Caithness. The site was excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), the proprietor of the Keiss estate, between 1890-1. Between 1890 and 1904, Barry excavated around 14 brochs. This drawing by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows a plan of Wester broch together with the remains of outbuildings. The broch and associated structures are contained within an enclosure wall and a paved entrance into the enclosure can be seen top left. Nicolson was born in Stemster, John O' Groats, and lived most of his life at Nybster. He was a skilled sculptor and artist with a keen interest in the archaeology of the area and undertook many excavations, illustrating his discoveries in sketches and drawings. The Nicolson collection offers an important insight into archaeological research in Caithness in the late 19th and early 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
