Scope and Content Map of Caithness showing location of sites investigated by Sir Francis Tress Barry In 1881, Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) bought the Keiss estate in north-east Caithness and, between 1890 and 1904, excavated at least 25 archaeological sites, including a number of brochs. This early Ordnance Survey map is annotated with dots to mark the location of various archaeological sites across Caithness. The numbered sites refer to monuments excavated by Barry including a cluster of brochs around his estate at Keiss (marked as 1 to 3). Barry spent many summer months excavating the sites marked on the map. He employed local people, and particularly relied on a local factor, John Nicolson (1843-1934) to supervise many of his excavations. It was probably Nicolson who annotated the map.
