Scope and Content Watercolour of a cist burial at Acharole, Caithness, Highland In August 1904, Robert Sutherland stumbled across a cist containing an unburnt burial whilst excavating a gravel-pit at Acharole, Caithness. The cist was recorded in a watercolour by a local man John Nicolson (1843-1934). This watercolour by Nicolson shows the cist. It was constructed of four flat slabs, set on edge for the sides and ends, with three irregularly shaped flat stones as a cover. The skeleton lay in a contracted position and the accompanying urn was placed to the right of the head. Nicolson also drew the nearby standing stones (top left). Nicolson drew many of the rich archaeological remains uncovered across Caithness during the 19th and 20th centuries. He had a particular eye for detail, hence the close likeness between Nicolson's drawing and a photograph that was taken during the excavation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
