Scope and Content Watercolour of a cist burial at Acharole, Caithness, Highland In August 1904, Robert Sutherland stumbled across a cist containing an unburnt burial whilst excavating a gravel-pit at Acharole, Caithness. This watercolour of the cist was drawn by a local man, John Nicolson (1843-1934). As Nicolson's drawing shows, the cist was constructed of four flat slabs set on edge to form the sides and ends, with three irregularly shaped flat stones placed over them for a cover. The skeleton lay in a contracted position and an urn was placed to the right of the head. The standing stones that are located near the cist can also be seen (top left) Nicolson drew many of the rich archaeological remains uncovered across Caithness during the 19th- and 20th-centuries. The close similarity between Nicolson's drawing and a photograph taken during the excavation reveals his eye for detail. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
