Scope and Content Drawing of a cist burial discovered at Acharole, Caithness, Highland A short cist, containing a crouched male inhumation and a beaker, was found by Robert Sutherland in August 1904 when excavating gravel from a small mound near a standing stone at Acharole, Watten, Caithness. This pencil drawing by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows the cist and the burial it contained. It provides a valuable record of the size and shape of the cist, the orientation of the body, the place where the beaker was found and the relationship between this burial to the nearby standing stones. Nicolson drew many of the archaeological remains uncovered across Caithness during the late 19th-/early 20th centuries. He had a particular attention to detail. A surviving photograph of this cist demonstrates the accuracy of Nicolson's drawing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
