Scope and Content Watercolour of bone and stone objects from Cogle broch, Caithness, Highland Cogle broch is located at Watten, Caithness and survives as a low mound covered with vegetation. The structure was excavated in 1905 by Dr. Anstruther Davidson and a plan was made of the exposed building by John Nicolson (1843-1934) of Nybster. Nicolson also drew some of the objects found in the broch. This watercolour shows two antler tines or horns, partly hollowed out to be used as handles or similar attachments, and a stone spindle whorl used for textile working. Such artefacts are commonly found at broch sites. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats, in 1843. A keen artist and archaeologist, he spent many years excavating archaeological sites with Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), a local estate owner. Cogle broch was one of the few sites that Nicolson investigated independently of Barry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
