Scope and Content Drawing of a mound at Fairy Hillock, Wick and a dish dredged up at Wick Harbour, Caithness, Highland This sketch, drawn by John Nicolson (1843-1934) in 1903, provides insight into two different time periods of north-east Caithness. The top illustration is of a mound at Fairy Hillock; the bottom sketch is of a dish dredged up in Wick Harbour. The mound at Fairy Hillock may be a cairn or a broch and therefore of prehistoric date. There is no record of Nicolson excavating at the site. The dish is more modern and, after it was dredged up in Wick, it was given to Mr Sinclair of Dunbeath. Nicolson was a skilled artist with a keen interest in the prehistory and history of Caithness. Between c.1880 and 1920 he recorded many sites and finds found across Caithness. This sketch demonstrates Nicolson's range of interest: from cairns to decorative dishes! Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
