Scope and Content Watercolour of Kirk Stones, Caithness, Highland In north-east Caithness, near Stroupster, is a site called Kirk Stones. This extraordinary site has attracted attention since an early date and is an alleged ecclesiastical complex. The excavation of a possible chapel (No 1 on Nicolson's plan) was begun by Laing before 1866 and was completed by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907). The other structures were cleared by John Nicolson (1843-1934). This watercolour by Nicolson, dated to 1916, shows a plan of the site and is similar to another drawn by Nicolson in 1915. Four structures are visible enclosed by a stone wall and ditch. Other large stones, some of them set on edge, lie within the enclosure. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats, and was a keen local artist and archaeologist. From c.1890 to 1920, he excavated a number of archaeological sites across Caithness. As well as excavating, he also produced an invaluable watercolour record of the artefacts and structures he uncovered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
