Description Scanned image of a drawing of a stone disc.

Date c. 1895 to 1920

Collection Papers of John Nicolson, antiquarian, Keiss, Caithness, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 876531

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Watercolour of a stone disc, possibly a pot lid, from Caithness, Highland Caithness is the most northerly county in mainland Scotland and is rich in archaeological remains including chambered cairns, standing stones and brochs. There have been few modern excavations and our understanding of the past relies greatly on work carried out over a hundred years ago. This watercolour was painted by John Nicolson (1843-1934) probably around the beginning of the 20th century. It depicts a round object, probably of stone. Not enough information survives to tell us what the object is or where it was found. However, it bears close similarity to stone discs found during broch excavations. These discs may have been used as pot lids. Caithness has more brochs than any other area of Scotland: there may be as many as 200. The majority were excavated towards the end of the 19th century by local people, including John Nicolson of Nybster. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
