Scope and Content Drawing of a cross-slab from Latheron, Caithness, Highland In a farmhouse wall in Latheron, north-east Caithness is a cross-incised slab. Other carved stones known from the area are believed to have come from a 'Chapel Stones' site. This drawing is by John Nicolson (1843-1934). The upper arm of the cross and the greater part of the side arms are missing but the stem remains. The points where the arms and stem meet are filled with circular discs. This cross may be associated with Irish missionaries who came to the area around 1500 years ago. Nicolson was a keen artist and archaeologist. From around 1890 to 1920, he excavated a number of archaeological sites across Caithness. He merged his love for archaeology and art by painting many of the artefacts found across the county.
