Scope and Content Drawing of a trincher found in peat in Latheron, Caithness, Highland Caithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain, is incredibly rich in prehistoric and historic monuments and landscapes. As well as producing important finds from excavated sites, numerous objects have been found in the landscape, often during peat-cutting. This drawing depicts a trincher, or drinking cup, found in peat below a fallen tree. The cup is possibly made from wood, although from the drawing it is difficult decide. The drawing was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934) of Nybster in September 1904. Nicolson is an important figure in understanding the prehistory of Caithness. He supervised the excavation of numerous brochs with Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1934) and undertook research and excavations on a number of sites on his own. As a skilled artist and sculptor, Nicolson also produced sketches and drawings of sites and artefacts. Some of the drawings are the only surviving illustrations of the objects. The drawing of this cup is a good example of this. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
