Scope and Content Watercolour of Picts Kilns, Bay of Sannick, Duncansby, Caithness, Highland Between c.1890 and 1920, John Nicolson (1843-1934) of Nybster excavated a number of archaeological sites across Caithness. Since the time of his arrival at Nybster in 1858 he spent his leisure time travelling around Caithness recording the archaeology of the county. This drawing by Nicolson dates to 1906 and shows 'Picts kilns'. As the annotation states the enclosure is pear-shaped with rough walls. During inspection by Nicolson, fish bones and ash were noted. Although called the 'Picts Kilns' there is no independent record of the function of this site. It is one of many of Nicolson's drawings which cannot be related to an archaeological site.
