Scope and Content Watercolour of a stone object from Caithness, Highland Caithness is the most northerly county in mainland Britain and is rich in archaeological remains. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, northern Caithness was an important area for archaeological research. Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) and John Nicolson (1843-1934) undertook a number of major excavations. This watercolour drawing of stone object is by Nicolson, who used his skills as an artist to illustrate the excavated sites and artefacts. The source, function and date of this object is unknown but it may have come from one of the sites excavated by Barry and Nicolson. The collection of sketches and drawings by Nicolson provides a unique and valuable insight into the archaeology of Caithness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
