Scope and Content Watercolour of a cist from Ackergill Links, Caithness, Highland At the start of the 20th century, a cemetery of kerbed cairns and cists was discovered on a sandy beach at Ackergill, Caithness. Pictish stones were also found nearby, leading many to believe that the area was an important Pictish cemetery 1500 years ago. Some of the cists were excavated by A J H Edwards in the 1920s. However, as this 1902 watercolour suggests, similar sites may have been investigated before this. Although difficult to be sure, the drawing may be of a round kerbed cairn. The watercolour was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934) who lived near Ackergill at Nybster. It is possible that Nicolson excavated a Pictish grave, as he recovered a Pictish stone from the area in 1896. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
