Scope and Content Watercolour of an object from Caithness, Highland Between c.1890-1920, John Nicolson (1843-1934), together with others such as Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), excavated a number of sites across Caithness. As well as excavating sites, Nicolson also recorded many of the sites and artefacts. This drawing is of a mystery object. Without any scale or caption it is impossible to tell what it is. A hole has obviously been bored through it. The colour and texture on the drawing may suggest that it was made of bone. Nicolson was born at John O' Groats in 1843 and moved to Nybster in later life. He became very interested in the archaeology and history of Caithness and has, arguably, excavated or supervised archaeological work on more sites in Caithness than anyone. His collection of drawings and sketches provide a unique reflection of this work. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
