Scope and Content Drawing of a stone pot from Canisbay and carving from Caithness, Highland The parish of Canisbay is on the north-east tip of Caithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain. The area is rich in archaeological and historical remains. This pencil drawing was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934). It shows two views of a stone pot, known locally as the 'Canisbay pot'. Oral tradition suggests that it was once a font, presumably from a church in Canisbay. The other object is a mystery. It has the appearance of a carved stone object. Nicolson was a skilled local artist who sketched and painted many of the sites and artefacts discovered during late 19th-/early 20th-century excavations. The association with Canisbay still remains today; Nicolson is buried in the church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
