SC 876313

Description Watercolour of two artefacts: a slotted iron tool and a ring.

Date c. 1890 to 1893

Collection Papers of John Nicolson, antiquarian, Keiss, Caithness, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 876313

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Watercolour of a ring and iron implement from Caithness, Highland Between c.1890-1920, John Nicolson (1843-1934), together with others such as Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), excavated a number of sites across Caithness. Nicolson also recorded many of the sites and artefacts. This watercolour by Nicolson shows two objects. The left hand object is a small ring, possibly of jet and the other is a slotted iron object similar to examples recovered from Early Christian Irish sites. These artefacts may have been discovered during Barry's late 19th-century excavations at Keiss broch, just north of Wick. Nicolson was born in 1843 at John O' Groats in north-east Caithness. He lived at Nybster for most of his life and became actively involved in archaeological investigations. Nicolson worked with Barry at a number of sites and continued to excavate after Barry's death in 1907. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
