Scope and Content Watercolour of Roman pottery and bone pin from brochs, Caithness, Highland Between 1890 and 1904, Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated a number of sites in north-east Caithness, including numerous brochs around his Keiss estate. Many of the brochs, although in a ruinous state, can still be visited today. This watercolour by John Nicolson (1843-1934) shows a piece of Roman pottery from Keiss broch and a bone pin of uncertain provenance. Roman finds are rare in the area and it is probable that the Roman pottery from Keiss illustrates trade with communities elsewhere. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats. He was a keen artist with an interest in the archaeology of Caithness and sketched and painted many of the buildings and the artefacts that were recovered during Barry's excavations.
