Scope and Content Watercolour of a cist burial at Acharole, Caithness, Highland In August 1904, Robert Sutherland stumbled across a cist containing an unburnt burial whilst excavating a gravel-pit at Acharole, Caithness. This watercolour was drawn by a local man John Nicolson (1843-1934) who visited the site during the excavation. As the painting shows, the cist was constructed of four flat slabs set on edge, for the sides and ends, with three irregularly shaped flat stones over them for a cover. The skeleton lay in a contracted position. An urn was placed at the right side of the head. Nicolson drew many of the rich archaeological remains uncovered across Caithness between 1880 and 1920. He had a particular attention to detail. The similarity of Nicolson's drawing to a photograph taken during the excavation is considerable. Nicolson even drew the nearby standing stones (top left) on his drawing! Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
