Scope and Content Watercolour of a standing stone 'Stone Lud' at Upper Bowertower, Caithness, Highland 'Stone Lud' is a standing stone at Upper Bowertower, Caithness. It is frequently suggested that this stone marks the grave of Liot, one of the Orkney Earls, who was mortally wounded in the battle with the Scots at Skida Mire between 943 and 945 AD The watercolour was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934), probably between 1880 and 1910. Note the annotation which maintains the association between the stone and Earl Liot. Nicolson spent a great deal of time travelling around Caithness drawing the various structures and artefacts uncovered. As well as being a keen artist, he also spent considerable time excavating a variety of sites. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
