Scope and Content Drawing of a possible stone cup from Barrock, Caithness, Highland Caithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain, is rich in prehistoric and historic monuments and landscapes. However, only a few sites have been excavated in modern times. The majority were excavated at the close of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. This drawing by John Nicolson (1843-1934) is dated to 1901 and shows a drinking cup from Caithness with 'the handle not pierced thro'. Although it is difficult to tell from the drawing, it is likely that the cup was made from stone. Nicolson played an important role in the early days of archaeological exploration in Caithness. He is best known for his supervision of the numerous broch excavations that were carried out by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907). However, he also produced drawings of the sites and objects discovered across the county, many of which no longer survive, like this cup. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
