Scope and Content Watercolour of a stone object from Caithness, Highland This watercolour was produced by John Nicolson (1843-1934) who lived in Nybster, north-east Caithness. Nicolson was a keen artist and archaeologist who excavated a number of sites towards the end of the 19th century. Nicolson was also a keen collector of strange objects! From the illustration alone, it is difficult to be sure what the object is or how old it is. Nicolson left us no clues. However, discussions with Nicolson's grandson suggest that the stone is a piece of natural rock, with apparent connections to Northumberland. Why Nicolson painted it, and indeed where it came from, will always remain a mystery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
