Scope and Content Drawing of bone and stone objects from Cogle broch, Caithness, Highland Cogle broch is in Watten, Caithness, and now survives as a low mound covered with vegetation. The site was excavated in 1905 by Dr. Anstruther Davidson and a plan was made of the exposed building by John Nicolson (1843-1934). Nicolson also drew some of the objects. This pencil drawing by Nicolson shows six objects. Four are antler tines or horns that have been partly hollowed out, possibly for use as handles or similar attachments. The bone object in the centre was possibly used as an awl to puncture holes in leather. The sixth object is a stone spindle whorl (bottom) used for textile working. Such objects are commonly found on broch sites. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats, in 1843. He was a keen artist and archaeologist and spent many years excavating archaeological sites in the area. The majority of the sites were excavated in conjunction with Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907), proprietor of the Keiss Estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
