Scope and Content Port Mor from the south-east, Muck, Small Isles, Highland The island of Muck is one of the Small Isles, along with Canna, Eigg and Rum. Its name translates as 'Swynes Ile', or 'Pig isle', possibly due to its shape. The fertile island has a population of only 30 people, who mostly live around the harbour of Port Mor. Muck has been owned by the same family, the MacEwens, for over 100 years. This shows the Port Mor harbour with its piers for mooring boats. Roads lead up from the harbour towards the abandoned crofting township of Sean Bhaile (centre top), with its patterns of ruined houses and stone enclosures. The largest of these enclosures surrounds the ruins of a chapel and burial ground known as A'Chill. The crofting township of Sean Bhaille is thought to have been abandoned in 1828, when the residents emigrated to America. Previous to this date, the island had a much larger population, numbering up to 144 people (in 1764). Evidence of 'rig' farming methods of the community can be seen all over the island.
