Scope and Content Port Mor from the north-west, Muck, Small Isles, Highland The island of Muck is one of the Small Isles, along with Canna, Eigg and Rum. Its name translates as 'Swynes Ile', or 'Pig isle', possibly due to its shape. The fertile island has a population of only 30 people, who mainly live near the harbour of Port Mor. Muck has been owned by the MacEwen family for over 100 years. This shows Port Mor, (top) with its cluster of houses around the harbour. The ruins of Sean Bhaile, an older crofting township can also be seen (centre). Around 20 houses were grouped around a central road. The community had its own burial ground, A'Chill, which possibly contained a chapel. The crofting township of Sean Bhaille is thought to have been abandoned in 1828, when the residents emigrated to America. Previous to this date, the island had a much larger population, numbering up to 144 people (in 1764). Evidence of 'rig' farming methods of the community can be seen all over the island.
