Scope and Content Mallaig from west, Highland Mallaig is a large fishing village overlooking the Sound of Sleat. It stands at the end of the famous 'Road to the Isles' and became prosperous when it became the terminus of the West Highland Railway from Fort William in 1901. Today, ferries leave from the pier for Skye, the Small Isles and the Knoydart peninsula. This shows the ferry port with approaching ferry (centre) next to the fishing boats around the inner harbour. The railway line can be seen entering the photograph from the bottom right. The housing on the hillside opposite the harbour was built in the late 20th century. The small island (foreground) is Eilean na h-Acairseid, 'the island of the harbour'. The West Highland Railway was originally planned to end at Roshven, on the south shore of Loch Ailort. However, the landowner could not agree terms with the company and Mallaig was developed instead. A thriving port developed and a steamer pier was opened in 1901, coinciding with the opening of the railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
