Scope and Content Mingulay Bay from the north-west, Mingulay, Western Isles Mingulay Bay lies on the east coast of the island of Mingulay at the southern end of the Western Isles. Mingulay was abandoned in 1912 after a human occupation which lasted from at least the Bronze Age. Mingulay was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland by Miss J M Fawcett in 2000. This shows St Columba's Roman Catholic chapel (foreground) which replaced an earlier chapel located in the centre of the township, at the head of the sandy beach. The lower parts of the deserted township have been covered by sand. The roofed building in the distance is the old schoolhouse. Since the start of written records, this has been the main settlement site on the island. Its present appearance is largely a product of the early 19th century, when population on the island expanded markedly. A census of 1881 records 150 inhabitants on the island.
