Scope and Content Township at Mingulay Bay, Mingulay, Western Isles Mingulay Bay lies on the east coast of the island of Mingulay at the southern end of the Western Isles. Since the first written accounts of the island, this has been the main settlement site and it was finally abandoned in 1912. Mingulay was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland by Miss J M Fawcett in 2000. This shows the old schoolhouse (left foreground). A paved road leads from the schoolhouse to the centre of the township which lies in ruins at the head of the sandy beach. The remains of St Columba's chapel can be seen above the township (top right). The settlement remains largely date to the early and mid-19th century, when population on the island expanded greatly. A census of 1881, records 150 inhabitants on the island who made their living by crofting, fishing and fowling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
