Scope and Content Ruined settlement at Port an t-Saoir, Coll, Argyll and Bute Coll lies to the north-west of Mull and north-east of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides. The island was held by the Maclean clan until it was sold to John Stewart in 1856. The Stewarts continued the clearance of the island begun by the Macleans and later repopulated the island with Ayrshire dairy farmers. This view shows the remains of the settlement (centre) at the edge of a small lochan. The remains of pre-crofting cultivation can be seen in the form of ridges, known as lazy bedding (farming raised strips of improved land). The settlement at Port an T-Saoir is a relic of a time when Coll was more populated. It comprises at least nine structures, one which is divided diagonally by a stream and is probably the remains of a mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
