Scope and Content Crannogs in Loch Cliad, Coll, Argyll and Bute These island dwellings, or crannogs, are located towards the north end of Loch Cliad, Coll. Ruins of buildings are visible on the largest crannog which is connected by a submerged causeway to the shore. This view shows the two crannogs. There is a further circular feature below the water which may be the remains of a third crannog (centre right). The northern and larger of the pair (foreground) is located close to the south-east tip of a peninsula that formed in the 19th century as a result of the partial drainage of the loch. The foundations of buildings have been identified on the larger island. These may tentatively be ascribed to the medieval period. Both islands are artificial and there are the remains of a causeway linking the larger island to the north shore of the loch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
