Scope and Content Lybster, Caithness, Highland In the early 19th century Lybster had a thriving herring industry and was recognised as the station of the Fisheries Officer for the parish of Latheron. In 1833 the station's output was classed as the third largest in Scotland after Wick and Fraserburgh. This view shows the village of Lybster from the east. It is laid out in a linear fashion along one main street that runs away from the sea cliffs and bisects the main road. The small road running out of Lybster (centre left) leads down to the harbour at the mouth of Reisgill burn. Lybster lies on the north east coast of Caithness near the mouth of the Reisgill burn where the harbour is located. The village was founded in 1802 by the proprietor, General Patrick Sinclair of Lybster, who named the streets after Liberal statesmen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
