Scope and Content Crofting township of Reiff and the north-west tip of the Coigach peninsula, Ross and Cromarty, Highland Reiff is located at the north-western tip of the Coigach peninsula in Wester Ross, to the north of Loch Broom. The crofting township was founded in the first half of the 19th century, following a reorganisation of the Cromarty Estate that saw the creation of a series of townships and the turning over of large tracts of land to sheep grazing. This view shows Reiff (centre left) and the small Loch of Reiff (foreground) that is fed by an inlet from Reiff Bay (centre left). The stretch of water in the background is Enard Bay. Croft fields can be seen stretching back from Reiff Bay and along the shore of the Loch of Reiff. The ridges that are visible in the land in the foreground are the remains of 'lazy-beds', a type of pre-crofting cultivation system that was designed to ensure maximum use of limited available land. It is probable the 'lazy-beds' were used in the late 18th-early 19th centuries when the population was high. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
