Scope and Content Crofting township of Reiff, Ross and Cromarty, Highland The township of Reiff lies at the north-west tip of the Coigach peninsula in Wester Ross, to the north of Loch Broom. The peninsula is largely comprised mountainous land and bog with settlement predominantly located on the coast. This view shows Reiff Bay (top left) and the narrow inlet opening into the Loch of Reiff (top). A slipway for boats is visible running down the beach into the bay. The remains of drystone croft field boundaries can also be clearly seen running from the bottom left towards the sea. Reiff township was founded in the first half of the 19th century when, following reorganisation of the Cromarty Estate, a series of crofting townships were created and large tracts of land were turned over to sheep grazing.
