Scope and Content High Mill, Carluke, Lanarkshire The mill and its associated buildings from the south-west, highlighting its hilltop location. The gabled building to the right of the tower was added after the sails were removed. The tower still contained millstones when this photograph was taken. A good, medium-sized example of a tower windmill built for grinding corn. It is probably of late 18th century date. In the mid-19th century it was apparently converted to steam power, and was later powered by a producer-gas engine. It was the last windmill to retain grain grinding equipment. This mill has been the subject of attempts at preservation attempts by the Carluke Historical Society, which involved taking out the millstones and gearing, and the remains of the steam and gas-engine powered equipment, and placing them in storage, so that the shell of the mill could be consolidated.
