Scope and Content Tower windmill, Glenugie, near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire This is one of a number of tower windmills in Scotland that appear to have been designed for pumping water. This one is dated 1822, and was in the grounds of the Glenugie Distillery in 1973. Until the 1960s there was a water-powered corn mill immediately adjacent. This is the tower from the south east, with distillery warehouses in the left background. The structure is notably slender, and in excellent repair. The water-powered corn mill was immediately to the right of the tower, and the main distillery buildings were out of sight to the right. Though provisionally identified as a pumping mill, it is possible that this was built to give auxiliary power to the water mill, which had a limited catchment. Glenugie Distillery appears to have been founded in 1831, but it is possible that there was an earlier distillery here, and that the corn mill was originally a malt mill.
